SOLILOQUY @ “LUMINOUS” BFI GALA

We were very honoured to be asked to creatively direct the BFI’s first ever fund raising gala event ‘Luminous’. It was a long journey to pull the various elements of creative production together and we were very excited to present the results last night to an exclusive audience in London.

The event showcased the BFI’s extensive archive, focusing on the importance of film restoration and celebrating the UK’s film talent. All this material was crafted into 360 degree projection mapping around the entire ballroom at the 8 Northumberland Avenue venue, using a mixture of visual footage gathered from film shoots at the National Archive in Berkhamsted and 100’s of stills from their special collections.

The centre piece for the event was an epic multi screen audio visual piece called ‘Soliloquy’ that was written and directed by TLS creative director Christopher Thomas Allen. This kaleidoscopic exploration of film celebrates the role that moving image plays in all our lives and asks where we would be without it. The poetic narrative is read by Idris Elba accompanied by an original score by composer Jude Greenaway and live orchestration from the Urban Soul Orchestra.

MORE TWILIGHT PREMIER

Here’s another quick phone pic; this time of the snow theme animations with the crane camera rig monitors to the left for the live feeds inset on either side of the main screen. The animations kept moving forward through the landscapes with details such as birds flying across a valley, the full moon appearing, lightening and snow falling. I’d especially like to thank Dave Baum who was Creative Director on this plus the great team of freelancers:  Chris Pearson and BlinkinLABs’ Tom and Satako: your work looked fantastic!

TWILIGHT PREMIER

Last night I found myself on the red carpet for the Twilight premier … Although, sadly not on R Pats arm! TLS produced all the landscape animation backgrounds for the metres of LED that surrounded Leicester Square gardens. After last years Wembley Arena Barclays screens project it was great to work with Heart again and The Creative Technology team, Bez and Dave, could not have been a better technology partner. Here is a quick snap that was taken on my phone…

Automata brilliance in East Dulwich

This Friday, strolling down North Cross Road in East Dulwich, the kids and I caught the brilliant temporary exhibition at Space Station 65 of Cabaret Mechanical Theatre. They are fantastic: amazing detail and great fun. Go check it out, it’s open until 7th September and best of all free! There’s also a great street market all along North Cross Road on Fridays and Saturdays …

Who Am I?

Last Friday I enjoyed an afternoon of exhibitions in South Kensington including British Design, Thomas Heatherwick Studio and Ballgowns at the V&A, Atmosphere and Who am I? at the Science Museum. Who am I? is a fantastic experience, I have not seen a gallery that quiet with all ages occupied in a long time! The glass cabinets are full of wonderful objects with loads of information and at the same time fun, the interactive element has something for everyone. Here is a picture of an albino peacock … I highly recommend a visit to both these national institutions/treasures.

glitches in communication

Took these pics during a skype as chris and tim enter their final week of filming and audio work in Malaysia. They’ve already gathered over a terrabyte of material for ‘Super Everything’, TLS’ new performance project produced in collaboration with the British Council Malaysia. They’ve been working with great artists over in KL, check Facebook for photos of the shoots. The summer is going to be spent in an edit suite!
