New National Maritime Museum Commission

Our next museum commission is south of the river for the National Maritime Museum. TLS is producing the audio visual content for their new permanent gallery entrance ‘Voyagers: Britons and the sea’ designed by Real Studios.

This space will sit at the heart of the new Sami Ofer Wing. The gallery’s aim is to demonstrate how the collections of the museum can illustrate the vibrancy, diversity and contemporary significance of maritime histories and the personal stories that have been created by our relationship with the sea.

One aspect of the project will include personal interviews that discuss people’s relationship and memories of the sea. If you would like to get involved please send an email to alice@thelightsurgeons.co.uk

Welcome to our new website! It’s been a hot few weeks of WordPress hell here in the Surgery! But basically we’ve been re-building the site to make it easier to find stuff. There’s currently well over 60 different project posts covering film, installation, performance and artwork from almost 15 years of work now… We hope you enjoy the site if you are a new visitor or find it more user-friendly if you’ve been before… There’s a lot of nice new features: Visual menus which make it easier to browse our projects and a simple concertina menu system to refine your searches. Easy links to all our favorite social networks and channels on Vimeo and Youtube. A special new “in Development” category where we will be announcing new projects that are in the pipeline along with ones we hope to get off the ground and may require your help! We’ve also decided to add an “Art” or “Commercial” colour code to the site and you can toggle between these global categories at the top right hand corner of the site – allowing you to view all of our work from either perspective. So – we hope you enjoy the site and please subscribe to our newsletter to keep up to date on all things Light Surgeons. Be sure to watch this space as new work will be added on a regular basis now we promise!

LDN24 is a media art installation by The Light Surgeons for the Museum of London‘s Sackler Hall. It presents an anthropomorphic portrait of London that reveals the abstract dance of this 24-hour city. It explores the capital as a physical organism and its hidden relationship with a larger, digital landscape, creating a cardiogram of the city that perpetually reflects the ‘now’.

The film was created by a group of visual artist through an extensive series of visual studies around London in 2009. The resulting 30 minute film charts a daily cycle of the city which is then translated onto the surrounding LED curatin as a stream of live data feeds. These information feeds are being continually updated via the web and continually re-printed by the hands of a giant RGB clock.
